BE (Bachelor of Engineering) is a 4-year undergraduate engineering degree equivalent to B.Tech, primarily awarded by universities in South and West India. It covers engineering theory, applied science, and technical practice across the same range of branches as B.Tech — from Civil and Mechanical to CSE and ECE. BE graduates have the same career opportunities and recognition as B.Tech graduates.

GATE Preparation for BE Students
If you want to pursue M.Tech at IIT/NIT or join a PSU (BHEL, NTPC, ONGC) after your BE, start GATE preparation in the 3rd year of your BE. Focus on core subjects heavily weighted in GATE — for CSE: Algorithms, OS, DBMS, Networks, Theory of Computation; for Mechanical: Thermal, Manufacturing, Strength of Materials. A GATE score above 750 (out of 1000) is typically needed for IIT M.Tech admission. GATE coaching during the final year is highly recommended.

The full form of BE is Bachelor of Engineering. It is a 4-year undergraduate engineering degree (8 semesters) that covers engineering principles, applied sciences, and technical skills. BE is equivalent to B.Tech in terms of recognition — both are valid engineering degrees recognised by AICTE, UGC, and all Indian employers. The total duration including mandatory industrial training/internship at many colleges is 4.5 years.
BE and B.Tech are essentially equivalent degrees. The main distinctions are: (1) Name usage — B.Tech (Bachelor of Technology) is used by IITs, NITs, IIITs, and most North Indian colleges; BE (Bachelor of Engineering) is used by many South Indian (VTU, Anna University) and some West Indian universities (Pune University, Mumbai University); (2) Curriculum orientation — B.Tech is sometimes considered slightly more industry/application-oriented; BE may be more theoretical in some universities; (3) Recognition — both are equally recognised by employers, UPSC, GATE, and for higher studies.
The eligibility for BE is: (1) 10+2 (Class 12) with Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics (PCM); (2) Minimum 45–75% marks in Class 12 (higher cutoff for premier colleges); (3) Entrance exam: JEE Main (for CFTI/state colleges that accept JEE scores), state entrance tests like MHT CET (Maharashtra), KCET (Karnataka), TNEA (Tamil Nadu), KEAM (Kerala), or direct merit admission at private colleges.
BE degree is primarily offered by: (1) Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU) — Karnataka (largest engineering university in India with 200+ affiliated colleges); (2) Anna University — Tamil Nadu; (3) Savitribai Phule Pune University — Maharashtra; (4) Mumbai University — Maharashtra; (5) Rajiv Gandhi Proudyogiki Vishwavidyalaya (RGPV) — Madhya Pradesh; (6) BITS Pilani (awarded BE for most branches); (7) Osmania University, Andhra and other state universities.
Yes, BE degree is fully valid for government jobs and GATE (Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering). GATE accepts BE/B.Tech as qualifying degrees — there is no distinction. For government PSU recruitment (ONGC, BHEL, NTPC, ISRO through GATE score), BE is equally valid as B.Tech. UPSC Engineering Services Examination also accepts BE. All AICTE-approved BE colleges confer degrees with the same standing as B.Tech.
