CSIR-JRF provides ₹37,000/month (upgradeable to ₹42,000 as SRF) for science PhD scholars. UGC-JRF provides ₹31,000/month (upgradeable to ₹35,000 as SRF) for humanities and social science scholars. Both include annual contingency grants and are activated upon PhD enrolment at a recognised institution. Both exams are held twice yearly (June and December cycles).

For most Indian science PhD scholars, CSIR-JRF is the defining financial support that makes full-time PhD research viable. For humanities and social science scholars, UGC-JRF plays the same role. Understanding these fellowships thoroughly — exam pattern, stipend structure, SRF upgrade process, and activation formalities — helps scholars plan their PhD timeline and finances with confidence.

    CSIR-NET Exam Pattern (2026)

The CSIR-UGC NET exam consists of three parts: Part A (General Aptitude — 20 MCQs, 30 marks), Part B (Subject Knowledge — MCQs, 70 marks), and Part C (Higher Order Subject Questions — analytical MCQs, 60 marks). Total duration: 3 hours. JRF is awarded to the top ranks; the rest qualify as Assistant Professors only (no fellowship).

    UGC-NET Exam Pattern (2026)

UGC NET consists of two papers: Paper 1 (General Teaching and Research Aptitude — 50 questions, 100 marks) and Paper 2 (Subject-specific — 100 questions, 200 marks). Total duration: 3 hours. JRF is awarded based on combined score and merit rank. The top performers qualify for JRF; the rest qualify as Assistant Professors.

JRF to SRF Upgrade: How It Works

    1. Complete 2 years of PhD research as JRF
    2. Your institution conducts a progress assessment (usually a presentation or written review)
    3. Supervisor recommendation and departmental committee approval
    4. Submit SRF upgrade application to the awarding body (CSIR or UGC)
    5. Fellowship is enhanced to SRF level from the date of upgrade approval

Apply for Fellowship Immediately After Qualifying

Many scholars delay activating their fellowship after qualifying. Your JRF clock starts from the date of activation, not the exam date. Submit your joining report and fellowship activation documents as soon as you enrol in your PhD program to maximise your fellowship period.

"A CSIR or UGC fellowship is more than financial support — it is a mark of scholarly recognition. It tells your supervisors, your university, and future employers that you are among the top-ranked researchers in your cohort. Pursue it with that understanding."

    Frequently Asked Questions

Click a question to expand the answer.

CSIR-JRF stipend is ₹37,000/month for the first 2 years (JRF stage), upgraded to ₹42,000/month as SRF. UGC-JRF stipend is ₹31,000/month for the first 2 years, upgraded to ₹35,000/month as SRF. Both include an annual contingency grant of ₹20,000 (JRF) and ₹25,000 (SRF).

JRF (Junior Research Fellowship) is awarded for the first 2 years of PhD. SRF (Senior Research Fellowship) is an upgrade after completing 2 years and passing a departmental assessment or qualifying evaluation. SRF comes with a higher stipend and confirms research progress.

CSIR-NET covers science disciplines (Life Sciences, Chemical Sciences, Physical Sciences, Mathematical Sciences, Earth Sciences). UGC-NET covers humanities, social sciences, commerce, management, education, and language disciplines. Both award JRF for PhD fellowship, but through separate exams and awarding bodies.

There is an age limit (28 years for general category, 33 years for SC/ST/OBC/PwD) and you must not have already completed a PhD. Within these constraints, you can attempt multiple times. Age relaxation is also available for women candidates.

Your fellowship is activated when you join a recognised UGC-affiliated institution with proper research facilities. You must submit a joining report to the awarding body within a specified period. Most government universities, IITs, NITs, and deemed universities are eligible host institutions.

If you do not complete the SRF upgrade assessment within the prescribed period, your fellowship may lapse. Most institutions conduct the upgrade evaluation in the 2nd year. Failing the assessment means reverting to the JRF stipend level or potentially losing the fellowship — check your institution's specific policy.
