1. RC is decisive: In VARC, RC passages decide your score — read editorials from The Hindu, The Economist daily; 2. Don't skip DILR sets: Solve 3–4 DILR sets daily — accuracy beats speed here; 3. Mock analysis is more important than mocks: Spend equal time analysing mocks as taking them; 4. Don't neglect TITA questions in VARC — no negative marking makes them low-risk high-reward; 5. Target sectional percentiles: Even 95%ile overall won't help if one section is 60%ile.

MCQs carry 3 marks each with -1 negative marking; TITA (Type in the Answer) questions carry 3 marks with no negative marking.
For IIM Ahmedabad, Calcutta, and Bangalore (the top 3 IIMs), you typically need 99%ile+ overall with strong sectional scores. IIM Lucknow, Kozhikode, and Indore accept around 95–97%ile. New IIMs may call candidates from 90–92%ile. Note that sectional cutoffs are also mandatory — most IIMs require 85–90%ile in each section, not just overall.
A serious CAT aspirant should prepare for 6–12 months. If you are a non-engineering graduate or have weak quantitative skills, plan for 10–12 months. Engineering graduates with strong maths may need 6–8 months. The key is quality of preparation — daily structured study, regular mock tests (from August onwards), and rigorous error analysis. Simply studying for 12 months without mock tests and analysis is insufficient.
